I wrote many true stories of women in American history inmy home front book. I was amazed as I researched and discovered the courage and faith of these women and their chidren throught our nation’s history. Oe role involved spying on the Britiash. Here are a few women to check out.
A few heroines
Katherine Montgomery Bedsloe rolled spy messages in her curls while Emily Geiger rode through the dark of night to deliver mnessages. Another spy, Mrs. Patience Wright, sculpted in wax. She moved to England before the war, so London society embraced Patience and revealed many secrets. She hid information inside busts she shipped back to her sister in America that included details about British spies, weapons and planned attacks.
A note, attributed to forty-nine year old Quaker Lydia Barrington Darragh, prevented a British victory. Gen. Howe stayed in the Darragh house during the Philadelphia occupation. Lydia’s daughter described how her mother listened, from a closet, on December 2nd as Gen. Howe met with other officers. After the meeting Lydia feigned a sound sleep, then later rose and delivered the news. Lydia’s son William served in Gen. Washington’s army and she often sent coded notes through her younger son John.
I also shared research with Time Mahoney who created these movie released in June 2025 An Merican Miracle, directed and produced by Tim Mahoney delves into the true events surrounding George Washington and other well-known men of the American Revolution as well as Elizabeth Mombet Freeman and her victory in court for freedom thatc led to the end of slavary in Masachusettes.
