Significance of Bread in the Bible
Sunday, September 8, 2024 by Karen Whiting

A a child my mother often timed her baking so she would be pulling hot Irish bread out of the oven as we rushed in from school on a cold, blustery day. My children also rejoiced coming home as I pulled four loveas of honey of a whole wheat bread from the oven. They quickly got drinks, plates, hony, butter, and sat down to our feast. We’d talk and laugh.

Jesus called himself the Bread of Life. Proverbs 30:4 asks the question:

Who has wrapped the waters in His garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name or His Son’s name?
Surely you know!

He asks if we know His Son’s name. Jesus has many names and each one teaches us more about who He is and what he does. A little further into Proverbs 30, we seet a foreshadowing of the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father… where God is aaked to provide the food that is my portion (daily bread or lechem huki in Hebrew) and keep deception and lies away (avoid temptation).

Bread is significant in the Bible, from Genesis trough Revelation, bread or the ingreditents are often referenced. As I bake bread I think if how each ingredient reflects a characteristic of Jesus.

As Jesus echoes familiar phrases in the prayer, the people would have understood that enough food is a great blessing from God.
