Peace at Thanksgiving

Thamksgiving should be a day full of celebration and the sweetness of fellowship as we thank God for our many blessings. For some it’s a stressful time of people not getting along. Romans 12:18 reminds us to do what we can to live in peace and that starts with prayer.
Choose a way to pray together that embracs praying with children.
Pray ahead of the day for the people who will be at the table with you.
- Those upset by the election that they will remember that God is the one who is really in charge. Pray for all leaders to work together for the benefit of the people.
- For anyone who uses words as weapons, pray for God to give you words of kindness and encouragement. Ask God to help you simply thank the person for sharing personal thoughts. Words reveal what’s in the heart and people who use hurtful words reflect pain in their hearts. Respond with love, kindness., and encouragement.
- For the critical people reflect inner rejection and the need for perfection, ssk the individual to share the vision of what makes him or her happy at Thanksgiving. Sometimes their remarks are a cry to be noticed and accepted. Listening helps them feel they matter.
- For children without manners, invite them to be part of an activity that has no winners or losers. Praise them for their efforts and make jokes to get them laughing. Tell stories of your childhood, especially the funny tales.
- Ask everyone to share one blessing, one thing they are thankful for in their lives. Comment on the joy the blessing can bring all year.
- For those grieving a recent loss, share a happy memory of the person who passed on and invite the person to mention one great memory.
Remember it is only one day. Ask God to give you strength and energy. Choose to rely on God for inner peace.

List all you are thankful for and post some of those blessings around your home. Look at one when someone disrupts your peace.
